Watch With Us has written quite a bit about The CW’s Canadian drama Sullivan’s Crossing and the passionate new fan base it’s gained since being added to Netflix.

If you’re all caught up on that show, you may be wondering what to watch next.

Well, wonder no more, because Heartland is on Netflix, and it’s going to keep you hooked for the next several months — or even years.

Here’s why we recommend Heartland for Sullivan’s Crossing fans who are looking for their new favorite show!

‘Heartland’ Mixes Country Vibes with Multi-Generational Drama

Much like Sullivan’s Crossing, Heartland tells the story of a young woman and her complicated relationships with her family and neighbors in a small, rural community. The protagonist of Heartland is 15-year-old Amy Fleming (Amber Marshall), who goes to live with her grandfather Jack (Shaun Johnston) after an accident kills her mother. As she deals with this devastating loss, Amy begins a new life at Heartland Ranch, training horses and reconnecting with her estranged father, Tim (Chris Potter).

Amy’s older sister, Lou Fleming (Michelle Morgan), returns from the city at the start of the series to help run the ranch, leaving behind a lucrative career.

The relationship that will keep you tuning in, however, is the one between Amy and ranch hand Ty Borden (Graham Wardle). Their tumultuous love story is the heart of Heartland.

‘Heartland’ Is Uplifting and Inspiring

The Strong Women of Heartland

Despite the loss of her mother and her complicated relationship with her father, who was absent during her childhood due to drug and alcohol problems, Amy remains a positive and resilient character — and much of that is due to her work with the horses on Heartland Ranch.

The heartwarming connection between humans and animals is one of the recurring themes of the show, and it never fails to inspire. Amy has a special gift for rehabilitating injured horses, and after the pain of losing her mother, it’s clear that the horses do just as much to rehabilitate Amy.

Between the moving storylines about Amy’s work with animals and the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, Heartland is an uplifting series that feels almost therapeutic to watch.
