Does the thought of a meal send you sprinting to the bathroom? You’re definitely not alone.

Recent government data shows a surge in nasty stomach bugs like norovirus and influenza across the country, leaving millions of Americans doubled over in discomfort.

If you’re kicking off the New Year with your head in the toilet bowl, don’t stress: Dr. Joseph Salhab, a gastroenterologist known to his 1.8 million TikTok followers as “The Stomach Doc,” has some quick and easy techniques to help beat your nausea.

In a TikTok video that racked up more than 42,000 likes, Salhab dished out four rapid remedies that will have you feeling better in no time, especially if you’re struggling to keep anything down due to a virus.

The first tip? Sniffing isopropyl alcohol.

Commonly found in cleaning supplies and first aid kits, research suggests that inhaling isopropyl alcohol can effectively combat queasiness — with some studies even finding it works faster than standard anti-nausea meds.

Salhab noted that some emergency rooms are using the cheap and widely available alternative to offer quick relief to patients.

Still feeling green? Keep that nose working.

Salhab said aromatherapy is another option if you’re feeling sick to your stomach. Sniffing ginger and peppermint essential oils every few minutes may help stave off nausea.

This technique is backed by research that shows that when inhaled, essential oil molecules stimulate olfactory receptors in your nose, sending signals to your brain’s limbic system to help ease nausea.

It’s even a go-to for some cancer patients battling treatment-related queasiness.

If you’re on the go or don’t have any essential oils at home, Salhab said deep breathing exercises with or without aromatherapy can be an effective trick to stop yourself from retching.

Whether it’s stress-related nausea or a stomach bug, research indicates that breathing techniques are a solid alternative to over-the-counter meds that you can do anywhere, anytime.

These exercises can help lower stress levels and kick start the body’s relaxation response while also reducing intestinal movement and stomach acid production.

If you’ve tried it all and still feel like you’re about to lose your lunch, Salhab recommended reaching for Dramamine. It’s a time-tested remedy found in most pharmacies and convenience stores.

Salhab advised placing crushed-up, quick-dissolve tablets under your tongue for fast absorption and much-needed relief.
