The noise emanating from Madison Square Garden was a lot quieter on July 1 than it was just over a month ago.

Partly, that’s the nature of free agency, with deals struck in front offices or over texts. But for the Knicks, the first two days of NBA free agency have been not completely silent, but rather muted as far as making moves to better a team that went as far as their first Eastern Conference final in 25 years.

They saw how close they could get — just two wins shy of the NBA Finals, which would have been their first appearance since 1999 — and now the task at hand is to fill the gaps in the roster beside the glaring one at head coach.

An area of particular need is the bench, which couldn’t count on much more than Miles McBride as a reliable contributor last season.
