Director Ari Aster has characterized Midsommar as a break-up movie. To a certain extent, it is, as part of an unconventional horror story. Dani (Florence Pugh) suffers a terrible tragedy at the beginning of the film, and her boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor), feels like he can’t leave her while she’s dealing with it.
Months later, Christian’s friends, Josh (William Jackson Harper) and Mark (Will Poulter), invite him to a once-in-a-lifetime festival in rural Sweden. Dani comes with them, and what they encounter is a death cult hiding just out of plain sight. There’s a reason why this festival is rarely held, and these poor fools are going to find out the hard way.
Midsommar is streaming on HBO Max until February 1.
