Samuel D. Hunter has quietly established himself as one of the finest American playwrights working today. Quietly, because none of his plays has been seen on Broadway, despite being widely produced regionally and off-Broadway. Also because he is a rigorously—and rewardingly—economical dramatist. Consider his past three works: “A Case for the Existence of God,” “Little Bear Ridge Road,” and now “Grangeville” at the Signature Theatre. In each Mr. Hunter deploys just two actors, on minimalist sets. Each runs roughly 90 minutes—shorter than the first act of many a Broadway musical.
