Frances Tiafoe’s U.S. Open run is over.
After making the semifinals last year, the No. 17-seeded American was knocked out in straight sets in the third round by Jan-Lennard Struff, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Tiafoe put up a strong fight to stay alive in a third-set tiebreak but ultimately dropped it, 9-7.
The loss comes two months after he was knocked out of the second round at Wimbledon and less than an hour after fellow American Ben Shelton retired from the U.S. Open after an apparent shoulder injury in the middle of his third-round match.
