PHILADELPHIA — The best thing about the Mets continues to be their oddly reassuring website odds. No matter how badly they play, no matter how much their lead shrinks in their wild-card race to beat mediocrity, they continue to be a favorite of fancy computers.
The Mets took an 83.2 percent chance to make the playoffs into Thursday, via Fangraphs, and I can’t imagine how their hunk of metal came up with that. Don’t the Mets have to beat someone to be seen as that sort of heavy chalk?
Friday marks a week since they last logged a win.
The Mets’ disheartening 6-4 defeat to the Phillies here Thursday night made it a four-game sweep by their archnemesis, and six straight losses overall. The locker room was appropriately somber. One jersey was tossed lightly in anger, but this is a very calm team. That could be read as confidence, or it could be resignation — hard to say.
