Elon Musk has sold X in a $33 billion deal to his AI startup company almost three years after buying Twitter and rebranding it.

Musk, 53, announced the deal via a statement posted on his X account on Friday, March 28.

“The combination values xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion ($45B less $12B debt),” Musk wrote. “Since its founding two years ago, xAI has rapidly become one of the leading AI labs in the world, building models and data centers at unprecedented speed and scale.”

He continued, “X is the digital town square where more than 600M active users go to find the real-time source of ground truth and, in the last two years, has been transformed into one of the most efficient companies in the world, positioning it to deliver scalable future growth.”

The news comes more than a year after Musk’s startup created Grok, an AI-powered chatbot similar to ChatGPT.

Musk added it was time to “take the step to combine the data, models, compute, distribution and talent.”

In April 2022, the Tesla CEO reached a deal to buy Twitter for about $44 billion.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Musk said in a press release at the time.

Musk shared his plans for big changes in the press release confirming the purchase.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans,” he explained. “Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

There have been changes in Musk’s personal life recently, too. The businessman welcomed his fourth child with Shivon Zilis in February, which is his 14th child overall.

Musk already shares three children with the Neuralink executive: Arcadia, who was born in early 2024 and twins Strider and Azure, both born in November 2021.

Also in February, author Ashley St. Clair. claimed via an X post that she had welcomed Musk’s 13th child five months earlier.

In addition, Musk has six children with ex-wife Justine Wilson. Musk and Wilson, 51, who were married between 2000 and 2008, share twins Vivian and Griffin, both 20, and triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, all 18. The exes also shared son Nevada, who died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at 10 weeks old in 2002.

Musk later moved on with Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) in 2018 and they share three children together. They welcomed son X Æ A-Xii two years later in May 2020. Their daughter, Exa Dark Sideræl, followed one year later via surrogate. Isaacson’s book also confirmed that Musk and Grimes, who split for good in 2022, also share son Techno Mechanicus.
