Is the fake “tush push” going to be the Eagles’ new trick play?
Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Birds broke out a little deception to start off the fourth quarter, trailing the Chargers 13-9 at SoFi Stadium on Monday night.
The Eagles lined up on third-and-1 just shy of midfield as if they were going to run the “trush push,” but instead, Hurts pitched the ball to Barkley in the backfield and the Philadelphia running back burst up the field for a 52-yard touchdown run to his team a 16-13 lead after the extra point.
The run was Barkley’s longest of the game up to that point.
Barkley was seen gifting the ball to an Eagles fan in attendance for the turnover-filled affair Philadelphia lost 22-19 in overtime.
The fake “tush push” was just one of a number of odd moments that occurred during the game between the Chargers and Eagles, and in a bit of a fun twist, the game also happened to be the “Monsters Funday Football” broadcast on ESPN 2, featuring characters from the Disney classic, “Monsters Inc.”
The cartoon broadcast had Mike Wazowski standing in for Barkley and amounted to the Disney character taking the 52-yard run for a touchdown.
The Eagles have become synonymous with the “tush push,” perfecting the play much to the chagrin of other NFL teams.
The play has generated plenty of controversy and some NFL teams even made the push to have the play banned, though it didn’t garner enough votes this past offseason to be done away with.
Monday was not the first time a fake “tush push” has been deployed by a team.
The Ravens broke out one on Nov. 16 against the Browns when Mark Andrews ran for the touchdown after Baltimore had lined up for a “tush push.”
