Donatella Versace knows turning 70 is a “big birthday,” so she went all-out to celebrate.

“What a way to celebrate my birthday — on Broadway with George Clooney in Good Night, and Good Luck. A tour de force! 🎂🥳🎉🎈,” the noted fashion designer wrote via Instagram on Friday, May 2, referring to Clooney’s Great White Way debut. “George, your talent, your courage and your passion are totally inspiring. Congratulations on your Tony nomination! I was on the edge of my seat. Bravo!!”

After watching Clooney’s performance, Versace went backstage to greet the 63-year-old actor. While Clooney opted for a classic tux, Versace popped in a lilac, floral dress with beige platform boots.

Seeing Good Night was just the start of Versace’s big birthday celebrations, which will continue on Monday, May 5, during the annual Met Gala.

“Grateful — today and forever,” she wrote in another Instagram post on Friday. “It’s a big birthday for me today and I am in New York getting ready for my birthday party … AKA The Met Gala 😂😂😂 love you all 💜.”

Fashion’s biggest night is held on the first Monday of every May to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute exhibit. Versace has attended countless galas, dressing the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Angelina Jolie, Blake Lively and more Hollywood A-listers through the years.

At 2024’s Met Gala, Versace wore a teal archival piece from her 1997 collection.

“The design of my dress for this year’s Met Gala was inspired by the Ivy details from Versace Spring Summer ’97,” she wrote via Instagram at the time. “It features clear droplets shaped like morning dew…this is my ‘Garden of Time!’ Thank you to my incredible team for the hours spent creating this gown.”

It is not yet known how Versace will top her look on Monday, though it will presumably honor the evening’s “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme that highlights the importance of clothing and style to the formation of Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora.

Regardless, Versace’s birthday is just the start of a new chapter as she stepped down from her role as Chief Creative Officer of her namesake brand in March.
