Jamarion Brown, a basketball player at Henderson State, was killed after being shot in the head during a party Friday in Camp County, Texas, according to KLTV.
He was 23.
Onterrian Jamour Newton, a 17-year-old Mount Pleasant, Texas, native, has since been arrested and charged with murder, the Camp County Sheriff’s Office told the outlet.
Brown, also from Mount Pleasant, was shot in the head while attending a pool party and taken to a hospital, where he died, according to an additional KLTV report.
Officers received multiple calls of a shooting, and Brown was “seriously injured” after being found.
The sheriff’s office told the outlet that a helicopter arrived, but Brown was “too injured” to be transported in the air immediately, but he was later flown to a Tyler, Texas, hospital, where he died.
“He was a shining light to all who knew him, remembered for his warm spirit, deep commitment to family, and passion for basketball,” Brown’s obituary page reads.
“There he became a valued asset to the (Henderson State) University basketball team, earning the admiration of teammates, coaches, and fellow students alike. Basketball was one of Jamarion’s greatest passions, a game he played with heart, discipline, and joy. His other passion was family – the center of his life and the source of his strength. Whether on or off the court, Jamarion’s kindness, determination, and dedication were evident in everything that he did.”
Henderson State, a Division II school located in Arkadelphia, Ark., posted Sunday on Instagram a photo of Brown with the caption: “In loving memory of Jamarion Brown. Forever in our hearts. Forever a Reddie.”
“’Jo’ spent just one season in Arkadelphia, but his impact on our campus was profound,” the school wrote on Facebook. “His warmth and welcoming personality made him one of the most recognizable and respected students at Henderson State among not only his peers, but by faculty and staff as well. His smile lit up a room, and his dedication and care for his friends shone through in all of his daily interactions.
“Between the lines, Jo was a fiery competitor and a beloved teammate. An integral part of the 2024-25 Reddie men’s basketball team, he carved out a role for himself through his toughness, work ethic, selflessness, and winning attitude. Jo epitomized the Reddie Spirit and brought honor to both himself and Henderson State in the way he played the game every time he took the floor.”
Henderson, who completed his junior season after transferring from Southwestern Christian College, averaged 6.5 points and 3.6 rebounds across 23.6 minutes.
“No words can express our sadness for Jamarion’s family, friends, and teammates,” Henderson State coach Jimmy Elgas said in the school’s statement.
“We lift them all up in prayer. Jo’s impact was felt not only on the basketball court, but throughout the fabric of Henderson State University, and we all grieve together. His loss leaves a tremendous void on our campus, but Jo will be remembered and honored in our hearts forever.”
There are also pending charges regarding two individuals who were also injured during the shooting, Camp County Sheriff John Cortelyou told KLTV.
One of the individuals was shot in the leg and the other in the hip, per KLTV.
