From a Grand Slam victory to a first-round exit.

No. 2 seed Coco Gauff was stunned in the first round at Wimbledon on Tuesday, falling to Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, 7-6, 6-1.

Gauff, 21, was coming off a win at the French Open for her second Grand Slam title.

The loss snaps a streak of making it to the fourth round in seven straight grand slams for Gauff.

“I think it was a great match today. I was really on fire,” Yastremska said on the court after the match, pointing out she had fire painted on her nails.

“Playing against Coco, it is something special. … She’s a great player and great person.”

Since bursting onto the scene as a teenager by making it to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2019, Gauff has yet to get past that round at the All England Club.

She also lost in the first round at Wimbledon two years ago to Sofia Kenin.

However, she rebounded to win the 2023 U.S. Open for her first career Grand Slam title, which started the streak of seven straight fourth rounds reached at Grand Slams.

Gauff made it to the semifinals at the 2024 Australian and French Opens and made the quarters at this year’s Australian Open before winning at Roland Garros.

This is a developing story.
