Joe Mazzulla has led the Celtics to the most wins in the regular season the past three years and secured a ring for the franchise in 2023-24.
On Friday, he was rewarded for all of those results.
Mazzulla signed a contract extension with the Celtics that will have him roaming courtside for at least two more years, though the details were not revealed in Boston’s announcement.
“This is truly a blessing,” Mazzulla said in the release. “I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, (top basketball executive) Brad (Steven)’s mentorship, and the support of our staff. Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston.”
Stevens, the Celtics’ head coach from 2013-21 and now the president of basketball operations, expressed excitement over Mazzulla remaining with the franchise long-term.
“He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans,” Stevens said in the team’s release.
“He’s worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach — including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA championship.”
Mazzulla was an assistant for the Celtics for three years before becoming a head coach.
He previously coached their G-League team, the Maine Red Claws.
Before joining the NBA, Mazzulla was an assistant coach for a pair of Division II programs — Glenville State and Fairmont State — and played college basketball at West Virginia.
Last season was great for the Celtics and Mazzulla until the playoffs hit and superstar Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles tendon, eventually leading to Knicks eliminating them in the second round.
Mazzulla has his work cut out for him come next season.
Tatum will likely be out for the season while recovering.
Other players from last year’s Celtics roster have been forced to find new homes due to cap concerns, too.
Still, even though the 2025-26 season might be a challenging campaign for the Celtics, at least Mazzulla will have some contract stability.
