Mac Jones appears to be getting another shot in San Francisco.

49ers starting quarterback Brock Purdy, who has been dealing with a toe injury, is “highly unlikely to start” against the Cardinals on Sunday, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, setting up Jones for a second straight start.

Purdy had practiced in a limited capacity this week in hopes of suiting up for the divisional battle between the two undefeated teams.

Shanahan left the door open for Purdy to be in uniform as Jones’ backup or an emergency third-string quarterback.

“A lot of progress and thought he had a good week,” Shanahan said. “We’ll see how he does tomorrow.”

Shanahan had hinted that Purdy “does have a chance” to play in Sunday’s home opener earlier this week before his comments on Friday.

Purdy missed last Sunday’s 26-21 49ers win over the Saints in New Orleans.

Jones took over under center for Purdy in that game, completing 26 of 39 passes for 279 yards and three touchdowns in his first start for San Francisco.

In Week 1, Purdy played through the toe injury and a left shoulder issue during a win over the Seahawks.

He went 26 for 35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in that game.

Purdy is one of a few key players that are dealing with injuries during the early going of the 2025 season.

Star tight end George Kittle is on injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

Wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who is dealing with an ankle/calf issue, is uncertain to play on Sunday.
