The Bengals paid tribute to late Jets great Nick Mangold on Sunday ahead of the team’s Week 8 home clash against Gang Green.
The team held a moment of silence for the Ohio native in the press box at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati.
The moment came after news broke Sunday morning that Mangold had died Saturday night from complications of kidney disease. He was 41 years old.
“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Jets chairman Woody Johnson said. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”
A former first-round pick by the Jets in 2006, Mangold played 11 seasons as a center before retiring in 2016.
Mangold is survived by his wife, Jenny, and their four children.
In the weeks before his passing, Mangold revealed he needed a new kidney and was seeking a donor.
“In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease,” he wrote in a social media statement this month. “After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”
The Jets entered Sunday’s game against the Bengals at 0-7.
