AJ Michalka has nothing but kind things to say about her relationship with ex Joe Jonas.

“Even though, obviously, him and I were together, I think that there is a friendship there that will always be there,” the Aly & AJ singer, 34, told People in an interview published on Wednesday, September 25. “We were together when our music careers were just taking off, so there’s a nuance that most people don’t understand. That’s kind of cool.”

Michalka continued of Jonas, who shares daughters Willa, 5, and Delphine, 3, with ex-wife Sophie Turner, “He’s a dad now. He works really hard, and he still has a really good sense of humor. And he is really kind. It was very refreshing to see that.”

AJ dated Jonas, 36, for nearly one year in 2006 after she and sister Aly Michalka opened for the Jonas Brothers on tour. Following their split, rumors swirled that Aly & AJ’s hit track “Potential Breakup Song” was about the “Cake By the Ocean” singer. However, the sisters denied that the song was “connected to any particular person” in a 2020 interview with Business Insider.

“We were just like, ‘Let’s write a break up song,’” AJ explained at the time. “We weren’t thinking it was going to be a breakup anthem, but it kind of became that, which is really cool.”

Jonas, who is confirmed to have inspired Aly & AJ’s 2007 song “Flattery” off their album Insomniatic, also poked fun at the “Potential Breakup Song” rumors with Aly and AJ via a TikTok video in May. The Michalka sisters and the boy band member lip-synced lyrics to the famous tune while pretending to be on the phone.

“It took too long, it took too long, it took too long for you to call back,” Jonas said before the camera panned over to Aly and AJ. “And normally I would just forget that / Except for the fact it was my birthday.”

All three singers then delivered the song’s most iconic line: “My stupid birthday!”

In the caption, Jonas wrote, “OK but I’d never do that on your birthday @Aly and AJ.”

The sisters responded, “And yet they STILL think it’s about you.”

The trio made the TikTok video while backstage at Jonas’ concert at The Mint in Los Angeles after he had texted Aly and AJ and asked them to perform their 2005 song “No One” with him.

“We were like, ‘Yes, of course.’ It was a really awesome moment,” AJ, who has been in a long-term relationship with actor Josh Pence since 2017, told People. “It was super sweet. He met [Aly’s son] Jack, and we hung out a little bit backstage.”

She continued, “I think the fans were pleasantly surprised, and it had been so long that I think it was really refreshing for a lot of fans to see us back together. But he’s lovely. It was a really fun night.”

As for whether or not fans might see Aly & AJ pop up as special guests on the Jonas Brothers’ Jonas20: Greetings From Your Hometown Tour, AJ teased, “There’s definitely a possibility. It’s just a matter of if the stars align and we’re able to make it happen with both of us being out on the road. It’s tricky, but, yeah, ideally, that would be awesome.”

Aly added, “I think it would be really fun.”
