Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s engagement news nearly stopped the Earth on its axis, and the aftermath included some very outlandish — and sometimes polarizing — reactions from the sports world.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end and the pop star, both 35, announced their engagement on Tuesday, August 26.

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” the couple shared via Instagram alongside a carousel of photos from the proposal.

It didn’t take long for the sports community to react in real time, in one instance with an interruption of US Open coverage that didn’t sit well with all tennis fans.

For the wildest reactions to the engagement news heard ’round the world, including one from Kelce’s own teammate, keep reading.

Union Station Kansas City

The historic train station in Kansas City shone bright in honor of one of the city’s favorite sons.

“Congratulations, Travis and Taylor!” Union Station Kansas City posted via X on Tuesday night. “We are so excited to celebrate this magical new era with you! Tonight, the (Chiefs) Kingdom lights shine for you, as Union Station features a special celebratory lighting display of Orange and Mint coming together with Red and Gold.”

Orange and mint represent Swift’s new Life of a Showgirl era, while the red and gold represent the colors of the Chiefs.

Mr. and Mrs. Met

Swift and Kelce weren’t the only buzzy engagement on Tuesday.

Mr. and Mrs. Met, the mascots of Major League Baseball’s New York Mets, also got engaged in a proposal that mimicked that of the NFL star and the “Cruel Summer” singer.

“Mrs. Met was always my love story 🧡💙,” Mr. Met wrote via Instagram. “Congrats to our other favorite sports couple, @killatrav and @taylorswift.”

The baseball-headed couple got engaged in a garden setting outside Citi Field, the Mets’ home in Queens.

“Gonna tell my kids this is Travis and Taylor,” one person commented.

Another wrote, “The only engagement I care about today. 😂”

US Open Gets Interrupted

Jannik Sinner might be the No. 1 men’s tennis player in the world, but even he was no match for the Kelce and Swift news.

During Sinner’s first round match against Vit Kopriva at the 2025 US Open on Tuesday, analyst Mary Carillo broke in with an enthusiastic announcement from the broadcast booth.

“Taylor Swift is engaged!” Carillo, 68, said.

Her broadcast partner, Jim Courier, reacted with confusion, saying, “Like, with a new record or …”

“She is engaged to be … she’s gonna get married!” Carillo muttered.

Carillo added, “Mazel tov to them both.”

While the broadcasters were excited about the engagement news, not all tennis fans watching at home were as enthused.

“Why would anyone watching the US Open coverage care?” one person commented on a clip of the exchange via X.

Another wrote, “You just wanted to talk about the engagement, but there’s no connection whatsoever to a fine exchange between two tennis players!

Mike Danna

Immediately after the engagement news dropped, Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Mike Danna took to the podium before the team’s practice like a deer in headlights.

“I just got told 30 seconds ago,” Danna, 27, told reporters on Tuesday. “But that’s awesome. I’m so happy for them — Trav, Taylor, that’s a wonderful time in their life. A wonderful part of their journey. That’s a beautiful thing to see.”

Danna said he has only been around Swift “once or twice” but gushed about her future with Kelce.

“That’s a great thing to see,” he said. “Seeing them settle down, seeing all [those] happy smiles and happy faces between the two.”

Danna even suggested he might get Swift some store-bought Pop-Tarts as an engagement gift to repay her for the homemade Pop-Tarts she made the team last season.

“Listen, them things will get you in trouble,” Danna said. “Those are dessert and those are fire. If you have one, best believe you’re gonna want two. Maybe three. She did Pop-Tarts for the whole position groups. The D-line was all over those.”

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs wasted little time in congratulating Kelce and Swift, all while using one of her songs to firmly secure her spot at their table.

“Today is a fairytale ❤️💍,” the team’s official Instagram wrote on Tuesday. “Congrats to Travis and Taylor—we’re excited to have you as a permanent member of the Chiefs Kingdom family!”

Tavia Hunt, the wife of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, commented, “From friendship bracelets to FOREVER!❤️💍Congratulations!! 🎉.”

Kelce and the Chiefs open the 2025 NFL regular season in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday, September 5. There is currently no word on whether Swift will be in attendance.

Boston Celtics

Neither Kelce nor Swift have any major ties to the Boston area, but that didn’t stop the NBA’s Celtics from celebrating their engagement.

Shortly after the news broke, the team’s X account posted: “Days since Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce got engaged: 0. Days until The Life of a Showgirl drops: 37. Days until Celtics basketball: 56.”

While the Celtics social media team was in a celebratory mood, Celtics fans in the comments were not.

“What are we doing here,” one fan wrote.

Another fan referenced Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum’s injury during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks in May, writing, “This might be worse than Tatum tearing his Achilles.”

Cleveland Guardians

Major League Baseball’s Cleveland Guardians had their big day ruined by Kelce and Swift.

“Thanks a lot, Taylor Swift,” the team posted via X on Tuesday. “Now no one cares that next year’s schedule is out.”

All 30 MLB teams released their schedules on Tuesday afternoon, right around the time Kelce and Swift posted their engagement news.
